2010 Important Election Dates

June 25 - August 9:  Absentee voting period for the State Primary Election

July 20:  Deadline to pre-register to vote prior to the Primary Election, or may register to vote at the polling place on election day

August 3:  Filing for City of Long Lake municipal offices (Mayor, 2 Council Member seats) opens at 8:00 am

August 10:  STATE PRIMARY ELECTION

August 17:  Filing for City of Long Lake municipal offices (Mayor, 2 Council Member seats) closes at 5:00 pm

September 17 - November 1:  Absentee voting period for the State General Election

October 12:  Deadline to pre-register to vote prior to the General Election, or may register to vote at the polling place on election day

November 2:  STATE GENERAL ELECTION (ballot includes City of Long Lake municipal offices)

 

On Primary and General Election days, voting hours are from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm.

The polling place (voting location) for all City of Long Lake residents is Long Lake City Hall, 450 Virginia Avenue. 

 

Working on Election Day?  Don't forget ... Minnesota law allows voters to take time off from work with pay to vote.

City of Long Lake Municipal Election

The following municipal offices will be included on the November 2010 General Election ballot:

Mayor - Two (2) year term beginning January 2011

Council Members - Two (2) seats, four (4) year terms beginning January 2011

INTERESTED IN LEARNING MORE ABOUT LONG LAKE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL MEMBER CANDIDATES BEFORE ELECTION DAY?
The Lake Minnetonka Communications Commission (LMCC) invited candidates running for offices in the LMCC’s member cities the opportunity to come to their studio and tape a “Candidate Statement”.  The segments recorded will be airing on television channel 21 beginning October 18 through November 1.  Click HERE to view a copy of the LMCC’s special election coverage broadcast schedule.  Additionally candidate statements will be available for viewing on the LMCC’s website at www.lmcc-tv.org beginning Friday, October 15.

Within the two to three weeks prior to election day, it is anticipated that as in past election years, local newspapers such as ‘The Pioneer’ and ‘Lakeshore Weekly’ will also be publishing editions featuring city candidate information.

How Do I Vote?

Voting is easy; however you must be registered before you can vote.  The easiest way to register is to fill out a Voter Registration Application (click HERE for form) and mail the completed form to Hennepin County Elections, PSL 012 Government Center, 300 South Sixth Street, Minneapolis, MN  55487-0012. 

 

When to Register to Vote

You may either pre-register to vote at least 21 days before an election day (see deadlines for pre-registration above under "2010 Important Election Dates") or register at the polls on election day.

 

Eligibility of Voters

You are eligible to register and vote in Hennepin County if you are:

At least 18 years old on the day of the election;

bullet

A citizen of the United States; and

bullet

A resident of Minnesota for at least 20 days before the election.

 

You are NOT eligible to vote if you have been:

bullet

Convicted of treason or any felony without having your civil rights restored;

bullet

Found by a court to be legally incompetent; and/or

bullet

Are under a guardianship in which the court order revokes the ward's right to vote.

 

Who needs to register?

bullet

Individuals who have never registered to vote;

bullet

Individuals who have changed their name since they last registered;

bullet

Individuals who have not voted at least once in the last 4 years;

bullet

Individuals who have moved to a new residence in Minnesota.  If you completed a US Postal change-of-address form to permanently forward your mail to your new home, your voter registration may have been automatically updated (if so, you would have received a green postcard confirming your registration has been updated).

Where do I pre-register?

Voter Registration Applications are available in PDF format to download.  Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to view and print PDF files.  You may pre-register by mail or in-person at one of the following locations:

Deadline to Pre-Register

Individuals must register by July 20, 2010 for the Primary Election; and by October 12, 2010 for the General Election.

 

Election Day Registration Requirements

If you miss registering before Election Day, you may still register to vote on Election Day if you meet the eligibility requirements posted above.  To do so, you must provide election judges at the polling place with certain acceptable forms of identification to prove your eligibility, such as:

A Minnesota Driver's License, Learner's Permit, Identification Card, or a Tribal Identification Card with your current address (or the receipt for renewal or change of the license or ID)

bullet

A "Notice of Late Registration" received from the City Clerk if your voter registration application was received after the last day to pre-register

bullet

One of the following documents that contains your name and photo - Minnesota driver's license, identification card, or a Tribal identification card with a previous address, US passport, US military identification card or student identification card from a Minnesota college AND a bill for electric, water, gas, telephone, cell phone, cable TV, sewer or solid waste services with a due date within 30 days of the election that contains your name and current address.

Another registered voter living in your precinct who will come to the polling place with you to vouch for your residency.

 

 

How Do I Get an Absentee Ballot?
 

Voting by Absentee Ballot

Absentee voting allows individuals to get their ballot early and vote in person or by mail before Election Day.  Absentee balloting occurs within the 46 days before each election.

 

Eligible voters may vote by absentee ballot only if they are unable to vote in person on Election Day for any of the following reasons:

Absent from the precinct on Election Day

bullet

Illness or disability

bullet

Unable to go to the polling place due to a religious holiday or beliefs

bullet

An election judge serving in another precinct

 

To vote by absentee ballot, voters may:

RECEIVE AN ABSENTEE BALLOT BY MAIL - Download an Absentee Ballot Application, be sure to fully complete the application form, and mail the completed application to Hennepin County Elections, PSL 012 Government Center, 300 South Sixth Street, Minneapolis, MN  55487-0012 (address is also printed on the back side of the application form); or fax the application to Hennepin County Elections at 612.348.2151.  Upon receipt of the application, a ballot will be mailed to you promptly.

REQUEST AN ABSENTEE BALLOT IN PERSON - Visit the Long Lake City Hall office or Hennepin County Elections office (located at PSL 012 Government Center, 300 South Sixth Street, Minneapolis) to apply for and receive an absentee ballot in person.  You may either complete your ballot at that time or take it with you to mail back.

 

Any eligible voter who expects to be PERMANENTLY unable to go to the polling place due to health or disability may apply for permanent ongoing absentee status.  Under these circumstances, an eligible voter may download a Permanent Absentee Ballot Application and return the completed form to Long Lake City Hall.
